Moving out of university accommodation - everything you need to do
Author: Gabrielle D, Staff Writer
Graduating this summer? Or maybe you’re moving into your next year? On paper, moving out of university accommodation should be a simple task; pack your items, tidy up, hand over the keys, leave and never return! After all, how much stuff can you really have in such a small room anyway? Well, you’d be surprised how overwhelming your move can get, even if it is from a small room. To help you stay organised and ensure a smooth transition, here's a checklist of essential tasks to consider when moving out:
- Review the Move-Out Policy: Familiarise yourself with the move-out policies and procedures provided by your university or accommodation provider. This will give you a clear understanding of the expectations and any specific requirements for cleaning or repairs. Give an extra glance at any old contracts, speak to other people in the building and get clear on everything you’ll need when handing over the keys.
- Schedule a Move-Out Inspection: Coordinate with the accommodation office to schedule a move-out inspection. This will allow you to identify any potential issues that need to be addressed before leaving and clarify the condition you're expected to leave the room or apartment in. Make sure to leave plenty of time before your move-out date, just in case some emergency post-house-party repairs have to be made!
- Clean and Declutter: Ensure you clean your room/apartment thoroughly, in alignment with the Policy. Pay attention to the following areas:
- Dusting and wiping all surfaces, including furniture, shelves, and windowsills.
- Vacuuming or sweeping the floors and carpets.
- ShapeMopping hard floors.
- Cleaning the kitchen, including appliances, countertops, and sink.
- Cleaning the bathroom, including the toilet, shower/bathtub, sink, and mirrors.
- Emptying and cleaning out all rubbish bins.
- ShapeRemoving any personal belongings and disposing of unwanted items responsibly.
If you haven't already read our Ultimate Declutter Checklist, we highly recommend giving it a glance.
- Repair Damages: Take care of any minor damages or repairs that are your responsibility. This might include filling holes in walls, fixing broken fixtures, or replacing light bulbs. Easy DIY fixes can be made with shop-bought products in your local renovation store, and YouTube offers a plethora of fix-it tutorials!
- Settle Outstanding Bills: Make sure all utility bills, such as electricity, gas, or internet, are settled before you leave. Contact the service providers to inform them about the end of your tenancy and arrange for final readings or payments. If you are struggling with payments, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Money can be a hard thing to talk about, and there is no shame in talking to loved ones about your challenges.
- Return Keys and Access Cards: Return all keys, access cards, or any other provided access devices to the accommodation office or landlord as per their instructions. Keep a record or receipt of the return for your reference.
- Redirect post and Update Address: Arrange for your post to be redirected to your new address or update your address with relevant organisations, such as banks, government agencies, and subscriptions. This will ensure that you continue to receive the important stuff. Don’t forget about subscriptions, or certain web-accounts.
- Take Photos: Before you leave, take clear and timestamped photos of the room/apartment's condition. This will prove the state you left it in, protecting you from potential disputes or claims. Take close-ups and videos in clear daylight.
- Check for Personal Belongings: Double-check all wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, and storage areas to ensure you haven't left anything behind. It's easy to overlook small items, so be thorough in your search. Check underneath the bed, down the back of the wardrobe and all over the bathroom. Don’t forget the shared kitchen either!
- Arrange Help with Moving: If you have a significant amount of stuff to move, consider enlisting the help of friends, family, or professional movers to help you. Plan ahead and ensure you have suitable transport and packing supplies. At LOVESPACE, we’ll collect your items from your accommodation, store them for as long as you need, and return them back whenever you need. We’ll even take your items to a new address in mainland UK! You only pay for what you store, from as little as one box with our by-the-box service, or 15 - 200sqft+ of stuff in our storage units.
- Forwarding Address and Deposit: Provide your new address to the accommodation office or landlord so they can process the return of your security deposit or any other necessary documentation.
Remember, each university or accommodation provider may have specific requirements, so it's crucial to consult their guidelines and policies. By following this checklist, you can ensure a smooth move-out process and leave your university accommodation in good condition. After your move, enjoy life in a new (hopefully better) apartment. Go travelling and take on the next stages of education!
